What did MrBeast do in Mexico that caused controversy?

On May 10th, YouTube megastar MrBeast published a video documenting his visits to iconic Mexican archaeological sites like Chichén Itzá and Calakmul — but the internet didn’t respond with just likes.
The video, which has now surpassed 55 million views, includes footage from restricted and sacred locations normally closed to the public. Access was granted through official permits, not by MrBeast himself, according to Mexican authorities.
The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) confirmed its staff accompanied the YouTuber during filming but criticized the video’s post-production edits and theatrical claims as misleading. At one point in the video, MrBeast even admits he was surprised they were allowed in.
While Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum acknowledged the permissions, the country’s Culture Secretary publicly condemned the filming, hinting that sanctions may follow.
The controversy highlights a growing debate: where do content creation and cultural respect collide?
