During Napoleon's campaign in Egypt, a French soldier uncovered a black basalt slab covered in mysterious inscriptions near the town of Rosetta. This artifact, now known as the Rosetta Stone, contained the same text in Greek, Demotic, and Egyptian hieroglyphs. Its discovery allowed scholars to finally decode hieroglyphic writing.
