What unique feature will Nolan’s Odyssey have?

Christopher Nolan is making cinematic history once again. His next film, titled "Odyssey", will be the first-ever feature film shot entirely on analog IMAX film cameras.
While previous Nolan films like Oppenheimer and The Dark Knight were partially shot in IMAX, and other blockbusters like Thunderbolts used digital IMAX, Odyssey will fully embrace the original 70mm film format.
After Oppenheimer grossed $190 million at IMAX theaters worldwide, Nolan challenged the company to improve their gear — asking for quieter, lighter cameras and faster film processing times.
IMAX listened. According to CEO Richard Gelfond, the newly developed cameras are now 30% quieter, and the film development process is significantly faster, allowing Nolan and his team to review footage with less delay.
These upgraded IMAX cameras are reserved exclusively for Nolan — at least until he wraps Odyssey. After that, they’ll be available for rent by other filmmakers.
The film is set to hit international theaters on July 17, 2026.
